Introducing our newest 2026 Graduate Business Associates Millie Norman!

A graduate in Film Production, Millie has taken the plunge into the world of theatre by joining the New Adelphi Theatre team as our newest intern. She has been experiencing the day-to-day running of the Theatre, learning about the admin behind the scenes, and looking at the venue with fresh eyes to see what can be improved!

We decided to ask her a few questions about her internship thus far, what she’s hoping to learn, and any advice for future interns!

What made you apply for the University of Salford Internship?

When GAP first messaged me about this internship, I’d been unemployed for around six months. I was a graduate of Film Production, struggling to get my foot in the door in the film industry – hell, I was struggling to find work anywhere. This mostly came down to a lack of work experience and me targeting the wrong jobs. I was thoroughly lost. Therefore, I saw this internship as an opportunity, a way to broaden my horizons and expand on my skills.

Being a former student of Salford definitely pushed me to apply. I remember being a student and feeling blown away by the sheer amount of creativity and hard work on display. And it didn’t matter what department you were in, you still had a voice. How could I refuse a chance to help with that creativity?

What are you looking forward to doing in your internship?

Most definitely ushering. I remember being younger and visiting theatres, and thinking “Blimey! Imagine being a part of that!” And now I am part of it! Sort of.

I must confess that I’m not a very technical person. I’ve always been on the more creative side of industries, most notably writing. Regrettably, this preference led to some devastating mistakes in my course that impacted the quality of my assignments. So to get to learn skills that could help me in correcting said mistakes is a thrilling prospect.

I’ve started training this week. I’d love to be both technically skilled and booksmart. And whilst I don’t expect to learn everything overnight, I’m determined to soak up all the knowledge I can…like a sponge.

How have you found the transition from being student to staff member?

Less drastic than I thought it would be! Though that could be to do with the fact that I’ve always behaved like a student. All the “yes sir, no sir” mindsets are still drilled into me. Luckily, I’ve learned to relax a little. The best thing to do with this internship is to just go with the flow. Be responsible for your own actions, but also learn to quietly reflect on your work. It also helps that all the staff in New Adelphi are lovely people! I feel so safe around them, and they always know how to push me out of my comfort zone whilst still being friendly faces.

What would you say to someone considering taking up the internship?

CARPE DIEM. Or in simpler terms, GO FOR IT. Do not think that this internship will be a waste of time. Also do not think that a job in your favourite industry will fall out of the sky. If you think that you need more work experience, then take this up! If you’ve decided your original industry is not for you, try something new! And most importantly, if you think that this internship will help you to get further in your career, then it most likely will.

Believing in yourself is seen as a little cliche these days. But unfortunately for those who wish to be subversive, it really does work. Have faith in yourself. And be ready to try new things.

Where would you like the internship to lead you next?

Wherever the road takes me! My future is still a little uncertain, so I sadly can’t fully answer this question. But I don’t just think of this internship as another addition to my CV. I think it’s a push in the right direction – a direction that will hopefully lead me to an exciting new career. I honestly don’t mind where I go. As long as I can have fun and make someone’s day with my work.

Even after this internship is over, I will always be grateful to this university for giving me such an incredible opportunity. And I hope that this article inspires someone to take the plunge.
