Watch US Dance

Dance@Salford welcomes you to Watch US Dance.

In the Atrium, Coalesce Youth Dance launches this season with an electrifying showcase of raw talent and fearless creativity. First Look is a high-energy introduction to the new cohort and the explosive movement, rhythm, and connection that ignites the stage when they come together. Bursting with individuality, yet united in power, these young artists reveal the extraordinary skills, imagination, and passion that will define CYD’s journey this year.

Artemis, created by Alumni Artist in Residence Satya-Sara Khachik, follows a woman’s journey into womanhood — a path marked by discovery, challenge, and the search for belonging. Drawing upon the spirit of the goddess Artemis, the work explores how women find strength and guidance through community and the natural world. Through meditative, repetitive, and grounded movement, the choreography evokes cycles of growth and renewal. Earth-bound and reflective, Artemis becomes both a personal and collective ritual — a quiet meditation on resilience, wisdom, and the deep peace found in returning to nature.

Ying Productions are our second Alumni in Residence. This is what they have to say about their new student commission:

“We have sought to explore femininity as it is perceived and valued across cultures; through an East Asian lens, we investigate and question womanhood – both endured by traditions and reshaped in modern society. Rather than seeking to resolve these questions, our process has been a dialogue between East and West, at its heart, this piece reflects on the value of the feminine – sometimes celebrated, sometimes constrained – and invites the audience to consider how culture shapes the way we see, and the way we move.”

To Do: is a work created by First Year students and Lisa Cullen in their first six weeks at Salford. To Do: is inspired by the lists we make, and what is on them!

And finally, exploring the power of connection, Wild Shadows is a highly charged, physical dance production that interweaves unique solos, duets and powerful unison work from the dynamic cast of dancers. Seen through a labyrinth of light and darkness, the work is set within a dystopian landscape inspired by Robert Macfarlane’s Underland exploring the themes of rescue and courage. Cinematic and musically driven, the work demonstrates the strength of the individual and explores how we can find hope and resilience through unity. Wild Shadows originally toured as part of the MA Dance: Performance and Professional Practices (Emergence) programme in 2021 and 2022. Working on reimagining the work with Yue Ying Ho (Rehearsal Director, Emergence | “Wild Shadows” original cast) and Joss Arnott (Artistic Director, Emergence) this new reworking has an electrifying atmosphere complimented by original music by James Keane that creates a multi-sensory experience through movement and music.
